The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
