Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
